SAA defends Matshela Seshibe’s appointment as Acting CEO

South African Airways has defended its decision to appoint Matshela Seshibe as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of the airline.

In a statement issued on Monday, responding to recent negative media reports about Seshibe’s tenure as Daybreak Farms’ CEO, a government workers-owned company, SAA says the allegations made were fully examined and tested and found to be without merit at his previous employ.

SAA says it’s worried that the continued recycling of unsubstantiated claims against Seshibe, that they say have already been addressed, will undermine his appointment and his execution of the Acting role.

The SAA Board says it conducted the necessary governance and due diligence processes prior to confirming his appointment as Acting Group Chief Executive and added that it remained confident in his leadership, integrity as well as his ability to guide the organisation through its next phase.

Seshibe was installed in the position following the announcement of the sudden resignation of Professor John Lamola as CEO, after having played a critical role in turning around the airline following its exit out of business rescue and taking it into profit.
