Taxi carrying passengers.
The Kimberley Taxi Association says government’s failure to subsidise the taxi industry is leaving commuters exposed to rising transport costs.
This follows a more than 30% fare increase in Kimberley, which has sparked frustration among passengers who say they are already struggling with the high cost of living.
The association treasurer, Lesley Terreblanch says, “They must regulate the business, where customers can pay a smaller amount for a longer period. Regulate by the government, regulate the business, make sure that everyone thats is in the business becomes tax compliant. They must not rush to penalise the taxi owners and drivers and stuff.”
“Take us through an induction, help us for a year or two, so that we can become tax compliant. They must subsidise us and minimise the amount of taxis, you understand. And I think that will help us a lot, because now we’ll get a five or ten thousand from the government monthly. Then we don’t have to charge the commuter, because currently the taxi owners and the customer are suffering now,” adds Terreblanch.
