Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi has allocated the SABC R234 million.
Malatsi was in Parliament delivering his department’s expenditure for the financial 2026/2027.
He says overall his department has been allocated R2.5 billion budget by National Treasury.
“House chairperson, the department’s expenditure allocation for the 2026/2027 financial year is R2.5 billion. Of that R1.7 billion is transferred for portfolio entities.
ICASA will receive R505 million. The film and publication board will be allocated R112 million. The South African Post Office R595 million allocated for the special functioning of the universal postal obligation.
And the public broadcaster receives R234 million. House chairperson the budgetary constraints within our portfolio are clear and have a serious impact on the portfolio and our entities to deliver on our joint mandates.”
Malatsi has commended the SABC for continuously achieving unqualified audit opinions.
He says the improvement augurs well with the funding model for the financial stability of the public broadcaster.
“SABC has for the second consecutive years achieved an unqualified audit opinion which marks a remarkable improvement and the funding model study which has been developed and we are currently in consultation with National Treasury on the most suitable model to ensure that the public broadcaster is empowered to balance its commercial operations and public broadcasting mandate.”
