Zambian govt executes order over Lungu remains after appeal lapses

The Zambian government has executed the August 2025 Gauteng High Court in Pretoria’s judgment that entitles the government to repatriate the remains of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu for the purposes of a State funeral and burial.

This, after the Lungu family’s appeal bid in the Supreme Court of Appeal lapsed after the family failed to meet the deadlines it set together with the Zambian government on an expedited timeline approved by the appellate court.

Former President Lungu passed away in South Africa on the 5th of June 2025, however, a court battle and subsequent appeal process over his remains has halted his burial.

This execution process kicked off by the Zambian government spells the return of Lungu’s remains to his homeland of Zambia.

It is, however, unclear when that repatriation process will begin amid investigations.
