MK Party rejects e-voting proposal at IEC conference

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s National Organiser, Joseph Ndlela, says they reject the proposal for an electronic voting (e-voting) process.

He was speaking at the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) e-voting Conference underway in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The three-day conference brings together South Africans from all sectors of society, including political leaders, decision-makers, business, civil society and the public, to explore the feasibility of an online election system in the country.

Ndlela says they are not convinced that the IEC has adequate infrastructure to conduct such elections.

He says, “We are a victim of election rigging or what one would say is fraud and saying that one would need to be proven that the IEC is well positioned to be able to manage a system such as that. If they can’t manage the hybrid system, which is manual and electronic, which has been proven in the 2024 elections, what would make us change our minds with regards to that?”

‘E-voting premature’

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has warned that the implementation of e-voting is premature and detrimental to the electoral system.

The EFF raises concerns regarding unequal access to digital technology and the lack of infrastructure, which is often compromised by power outages.
