Durban residents protest against illegal immigration.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has raised concerns over a possible human rights crisis amid growing tensions linked to anti-illegal immigration protests in KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of the country.
The commission says it is working with police and United Nations agencies to prevent possible unrest, violence and intimidation linked to recent marches.
Concerns have also been raised about hate speech, unlawful conduct and the risk of escalating instability ahead of the 30 June deadline set by some protesting groups.
The SAHRC says it is monitoring the state’s preparedness amid rising anti-immigration tensions in several communities.
The commission says concerns raised during a recent Human Rights Imbizo included migration issues and service delivery challenges.
It has also engaged KwaZulu-Natal police and United Nations agencies on allegations of criminal activity and the risk of potential unrest.
The SAHRC says coordinated action is needed to protect vulnerable communities and maintain stability.
