Ramaphosa urges rule of law amid anti-undocumented migrant protests

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to uphold the rule of law and respect human rights, amid a surge in protests against undocumented nationals.

Speaking during the tabling of the Presidency Budget in Parliament, Ramaphosa acknowledged that illegal immigration remains a serious challenge in the country.

He has, however, warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands.

The president’s remarks come as the demonstrations against undocumented foreign nationals gain momentum nationwide.

Ramaphosa condemned violence and vigilantism in some protests.

“We must never give in to violence, to xenophobia and to vigilantism. As a society, we must stand against all forms of disinformation, of incitement, of false information being spread around, of racism and ethnic mobilisation.”
