The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has warned motorists against the use of fake personalised number plates.
The department says it has noticed an increase in fraudulent personalised plates since the rollout of the new number plate system.
It has also announced the sale of four-digit personalised licence numbers for motorists in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya has urged motorists to avoid illegal practices and obtain personalised plates through approved channels only.
“Application to reserve a personalised licence number will be provided at the venue. Importantly, we will continue to search for more available four-digit personalised licence numbers to be sold to motorists residing in Empangeni and Ladysmith, respectively. Critically, we wish to warn motorists to refrain from purchasing personalised vehicle licence plate numbers via social media platforms. As stated in the past, this practice is illegal and in violation of the National Road Traffic Act.”
