Some Kimberley taxi drivers say recent petrol price increases are hitting their industry hard.
Some drivers say they are filling up more than once a day.
They say that Wednesday’s petrol hike will hit them hard in the pocket.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced fuel adjustments for June, with petrol going up and diesel prices slightly dropping.
Petrol prices will go up by R1,43 cents a litre.
Diesel prices drop by between R3,25 and R2,62 cents per litre, depending on the grade.
Those using diesel say there won’t be much of a difference.
“I’m filling up now, and look at the time by eight o’clock I will be standing again at the filling station and filling up again, it’s a problem. Since the petrol is going up, I have to fill up twice compared to before”, says one taxi driver.
Another diver says, “It affects us too much; we can’t even really work because petrol prices are too high; we can’t even drive three or four loads; we have to pour now, and then it’s too bad.”
“I think every little bit makes a difference, and if it should come down in months to come, we would then feel the difference, but for now I suppose it won’t make much of a difference, but every little helps” says another driver.
