Mother, newborn rescued in Little Karoo after being trapped by floods

The Garden Route District Municipality says a helicopter has rescued a woman and her newborn baby who were trapped by flood waters at the Olifants River, outside of Calitzdorp in the Little Karoo.

The child was born last night after the woman went into labour.

Emergency services could not reach them due to the bad weather and flooded river.

The municipality says an EMS station officer guided a teacher who was with the expectant mother via a phone call, on how to help deliver the baby.

The helicopter landed there this morning and took the mother and baby girl to the Oudtshoorn Hospital for a check-up.

Both mother and child are doing well.
