Gift of the Givers provides relief to flood-stricken residents in NMB


Humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers is providing relief to flood affected residents in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape.

Heavy rain continues to cause disruption in the area living a number of residents destitute due to flooding.

One of the areas affected by flooding in Gqeberha is Missionvale.

Gift of the Givers has brought warm blankets, food and clothes for those in need.

The rain is expected to continue throughout the night and strong winds are expected to pick up after 9pm.

Spokesperson for Gift of the Givers, Ali Sablay, says their relief comes in form of disaster rescue teams and humanitarian relief.

“We’ve been into this area now, Missionvale. We’re going to have to go to Bethelsdorp as well, and there is about 15 to 20 community centres that’s been opened up. So, our estimation was, if I’m looking at the number of blankets and hot meals we are cooking it is close to over a 1 000. We are also assisting over a 1 000 people.”

Sablay adds, “These numbers can change during the night, as we do know, there’s more rainfall coming. So, our teams will be working on standby throughout the night to assist those who need to be evacuated, or any further assistance is required.”
