Cogta Minister to convene disaster management meeting on Sunday


Co-operative Governance Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa will this evening convene an intergovernmental Committee on Disaster Management meeting. According to the ministry, the severe weather conditions that have ravaged parts of the country have claimed 18 lives with the Western Cape recording the highest number of fatalities at 11. Other provinces that are affected by the rain and stormy weather include the Eastern Cape, Free State, North West and Northern Cape. Several people have been left homeless while the severe weather has also caused damage to infrastructure and homes.

COGTA Spokesperson, Pearl Maseko-Binqose says, “Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will indeed later on today convene an extended meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on Disaster Management to assess the impact of the recent severe weather conditions that affected parts of the country and tragically claimed lives. The meeting will bring together ministers, premiers from affected provinces, mayors, government officials and other stakeholders to evaluate the coordinated response currently underway and determine the way forward.”
