Eastern Cape’s Siyakholwa Kuse crowned WBC champion

South Africa’s Siyakholwa Kuse made history by winning the World Boxing Council’s minimum weight crown at Emperor’s Palace last night.

He’s the first Eastern Cape boxer to win a WBC (World Boxing Council) world title and only the fourth South African ever to hold a prestigious WBC belt.

Kuse beat Filipino Melvin Jerusalem by unanimous points decision in a rematch after failing to wrestle the title away from the champion in Manila six months ago.

The South African stamped his authority on the fight early on and when, with time running out, Jerusalem became the aggressor, Kuse counter-punched brilliantly.

The champion’s face was bloodied at final bell, well beaten in the ring and on all three judges’ scorecards.

The 27-year-old improved his professional record to 10 wins, three losses and a draw.
