A teenager is missing at sea and four others have been rescued after they ran into trouble while swimming at Monwabisi beach near Strandfontein in Cape Town.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says that the five boys, believed to be between 13 and 17 years old, had been swimming at the beach when they were caught in strong rip currents.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says that a lifeguard and several surfers rescued four of the boys before first responders had arrived at the scene.
He says that the fifth boy had been unaccounted for.
Craig Lambinon says, “Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search there remains no signs of the missing teenager. The four injured teenagers were transported to hospital by EMS (Emergency Medical Services) ambulance, two were in stable conditions and two were in serious but stable conditions. They are expected to make full recoveries in hospital in the care of doctors and nurses. Police divers are continuing in ongoing search efforts for the missing teenager.”
