Foot-and-mouth disease detected on KZN pig farm

Foot-and-mouth disease has been detected on a pig farm in the Dannhauser area in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The provincial Department of Agriculture says pigs on the affected farm have been vaccinated to contain the outbreak and reduce the viral load.

The disease, which began in the province in 2021 and has since spread across the country, has mainly affected beef and dairy cattle until now.

In the Amajuba District, where Dannhauser is located, more than 13 000 pigs and over 4 000 cattle have been vaccinated.

The department says a nationwide mass vaccination campaign is underway to limit the spread of the disease.

Vaccination efforts in the Ugu and Harry Gwala districts in the south of the province have largely been completed, with most herds already covered.
