Western Cape floods claim 11 lives, leaves 150 000 affected

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says at least 11 people have died in widespread flooding, while extensive damage has been caused to infrastructure.

About 150 roads remain affected by the storms.

Local authorities are appealing for urgent humanitarian assistance as mop-up operations begin following days of heavy rain.

Winde says the violent storms and relentless cold fronts have severely impacted the province, affecting approximately 150 000 people and displacing thousands across the Cape Metropole, Winelands, and Breede Valley.

“Today I actually travelled in a helicopter over some of the winelands areas which have also been devastatingly hit and there are bridges washed away. These are going to take a long time to fix. It has been absolutely devastating.”

“We’ve lost 11 lives and a number of them because of trees falling over. Right now I can look outside and see the wind coming up again. Although the weather service says this next cold front is level 2. So we ask residents to please be very careful,” adds Winde.
