A freeway in SA
Twenty pedestrians have been arrested in Benoni, East of Johannesburg.
Authorities say they were enforcing by-laws which prohibit pedestrians from walking on freeways because they are high-speed zones designed for vehicles.
The arrests were made under the National Road Traffic Act.
Six other pedestrians were arrested for allegedly contravening the Immigration Act.
“The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has urged pedestrians to prioritize their safety by using designated pedestrian bridges when crossing major roads and freeways, citing that crossing a freeway poses a serious danger to both pedestrians and motorists and this could result in severe or fatal accidents.”
