Second suspect arrested for DA MPs robbery attempt in Phillipi

Police in the Western Cape have arrested a second suspect in connection with the attempted robbery of three Democratic Alliance (DA) Members of Parliament in Philippi on the Cape Flats on Tuesday.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Browns Farm on Wednesday morning, following the arrest of another suspect, an 18-year-old boy, who was caught on Tuesday night.

This followed an attempt to hijack MPs Ian Cameron, Lisa Shickerling and Nicholas Gotsell as they were returning from an oversight visit to a police station.

The vehicle the MPs were travelling in was ambushed and its windows were broken with bricks.

Parliament explained the incident in detail in an X post this morning:

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says, “As part of an investigation into an attack on three members in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon, Western Cape serious crime detectives have arrested a 16-year-old in the early hours of Wednesday morning. This brings to two the number of suspects arrested for the crime incident. The first is under police guard in hospital after he was arrested on Tuesday evening. The two suspects face attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges.”
