The North West Department of Cooperative Governance says disaster management teams are currently conducting assessments in all areas affected by this week’s heavy rainfall.
The department says public and private properties were destroyed in the Rustenburg, Matlosana and Mahikeng local municipalities.
Spokesperson Thebeetsile Keameditse says some houses were waterlogged in Ramochana and Seraleng, while 33 houses were damaged in Mamerotse village.
Keameditse says the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provided food parcels, blankets and mattresses to 22 affected households.
“In the city of Matlosana, a windstorm affected 29 houses in Khuma. Three informal structures were damaged, while the roofs of twelve RDP houses and fourteen formal houses were blown off. Walls were damaged, and windows were broken. Furthermore, three wards in Verdwaal were affected by a windstorm, while hailstorms caused damage to windows of several houses in Mahikeng”, adds Keameditse.
