Seven people killed in a taxi and bus collision

The Eastern Cape Transport Department says police have launched investigations into the cause of a crash in which seven people were killed in Kariega.

At least 18 other people were injured in the crash, which involved a bus and a minibus taxi on Monday morning.

The minibus taxi transporting workers from KwaNobuhle to Kariega allegedly made a U-turn in front of an oncoming bus with only the driver on board.

The department’s spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, urges motorists to remain vigilant when they are driving.

“This is a devastating crash that has claimed seven lives. It is alleged that the taxi made a U-turn in front of the oncoming bus, which led to the collision that claimed so many lives. The MEC for transport, Mr Xolile Nqatha, has extended words of condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones, while wishing those in hospital a speedy recovery. We are looking into the real cause of this crash, and we are urging motorists to remain extra vigilant and help us avoid avoidable crashes like this one.”
