Orange Level 8 weather warning issued for Garden Route


Disaster management in the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape says all role players are on high alert following the Orange Level 8 Warning for the region.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has warned of heavy rains and gale force winds from tomorrow in the central and little Karoo and parts of the Garden Route.

Disaster Management head, Gerhard Otto, says they will be meeting with education officials to consider closing schools on Wednesday.

“We expect tomorrow around 30 to 40, to 50 mm of rain in places. On Wednesday, the bulk of the rain can exceed a 100 to 200 mm. We are also expecting wing gusts of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour, and in addition to that, wave heights of between five and eight and metres. We have, in addition, requested a meeting with the Department of Education as we consider to even close schools in the Garden Route for Wednesday.”
