Two police officers attached to Bethal Police Station have been arrested for alleged corruption and extortion.
The officers are accused of demanding money from a businessman who was unable to produce a license for operating a hair salon. It is alleged that they took cash and indicated they would return for more.
The pair is expected to appear at the Bethal Magistrates’ Court.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says, “The officers, a sergeant and a constable, were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. It is alleged that in January 2025, the police officers demanded money from a businessman who failed to produce a license for operating a hair salon.”
“The businessman subsequently reported the matter to a member of the Community Policing Forum who escalated to a senior SAPS member at the station. This led to an investigation and the actual arrest of the officers,” Masondo adds.
Authorities say the arrests form part of efforts to address corruption within law enforcement.
