The uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) is proceeding with its court case against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over the 2024 general elections, but has agreed to continue engaging with the body. The two sides met at former President Jacob Zuma’s residence in Nkandla to discuss various issues of concern.
The meeting between the IEC and the MK Party in Nkandla concluded with no issues resolved but both sides agreeing to hold further talks. IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya said they were encouraged by the level of engagement. #sabcnews #2026localpolls #IECMKP pic.twitter.com/nIXHtozaOU

These include the upcoming local polls, the work of the IEC, the state of democracy and voter apathy. They described the talks as having been productive, but conceded they could not resolve their issues. They agreed to hold a follow-up meeting despite the MK Party’s court case against the IEC which is to be heard in June.
The MKP says it’s proceeding with its legal action against the IEC while maintaining the need for further talks with the body. Party national chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko says the Nkandla meeting was positive. #sabcnews #2026localpolls #IECMKP pic.twitter.com/YWX5yXZbqH

MK Party National Chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko says their court case does not prevent them from having engagements with the IEC on election matters.
“The point really would be that we need to handle matters from the most responsible point of view ever, because when you talk about these institutions that make up our democratic outlook, all of us, as citizens, we have our little bit to contribute in developing a positive outlook of social and governance institutions.”
