Mixed reactions to ConCourt’s Phala Phala ruling from JHB residents

Johannesburg residents have expressed mixed reactions to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the Phala Phala matter.

On Friday, the court ruled that Parliament had acted unlawfully in 2022 when it voted to reject a report of an independent panel.

The report had recommended an impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding a theft at his Phala Phala farm in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, in February 2020.

The court also found that Parliament had used its majority to block accountability unconstitutionally.

The EFF and the ATM had brought the matter to the Constitutional Court.

Here are the views of some Johannesburg residents: “If President Ramaphosa is guilty of wrongdoing. He’s not about the law and that justice must take its course, and I feel that this is something for South Africans to appreciate: that no one is above the law.”

“If Malema’s going to face legal proceedings on such a thing, he must face the same. And if we’re going to be forgiving, then um, we must be forgiving, but if we’re not going to be forgiving, then he must, uh, he must face the music,” says another resident.

Meanwhile, the EFF has already written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to request that she immediately establish an impeachment committee on the Phala Phala matter.

The party leader, Julius Malema, said the supremacy of the country’s constitution has prevailed.
