Kouga Municipality’s disaster management teams remain on high alert

The Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape says its disaster management teams are already on the ground preparing for forecasted disastrous weather with heavy rainfall.

This follows a severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

The alert predicts widespread rainfall, with a high risk of flooding and infrastructural damage expected over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape extending to Free State.

The Kouga Municipality situated in the Sarah Baarman District is highly prone to multiple hazards, particularly flooding.

Executive Mayor of Kouga Municipality, Hattingh Bornman, says, “Our teams have been clearing block storm water over the last few days. We know the areas that usually flood and our teams are on standby. We are making sure that there are people ready to act as and when areas are flooded. We are doing everything we can and we are obviously thankful for the rain because our dam levels are extremely low. While we are thankful for the rain, we got to make sure that we protect our infrastructure and lives of residents. Therefore, we are really making sure that we are ready for the rain that is beautifully falling.”
