IEC Moepya leads talks with Zuma, MK Party in Nkandla

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), led by its Chairperson, Mosotho Moepya, is in Nkandla, meeting with uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) President Jacob Zuma and other senior members of the party.

The IEC says the meeting is part of its stakeholder engagement programme as it prepares for the November 4 local government elections. The meeting was expected last month when the IEC held a week-long consultation program with political parties and other stakeholders in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), but the MK Party cancelled at the last minute.

“The IEC says the meeting with the MK Party is part of its commitment to ensure respectful dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders ahead of the elections. However, the meeting comes amid a standoff between the IEC and MK Party regarding the 2024 general election. The MK Party is still alleging widespread irregularities. It went to court to challenge the IEC and the Electoral court is scheduled to hear the matter in June. Zuma has recently suggested that the IEC postpones the upcoming election until the court case is settled  a move that the electoral body has rejected as unconstitutional.
