Wreckage of a collapsed three-room shack.
Disaster officials in the Garden Route and Little Karoo say gale-force winds are pushing back their rehabilitation efforts following last week’s devastating floods.
Wind speeds of over 100 kilometres per hour have been gusting throughout the region, causing havoc to homes, businesses and infrastructure.
Disaster management head Gerhard Otto says, “This has been affecting the entire district, from Riversdale where three trucks have been blown over on the N2, right through Oudtshoorn, right through Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. We also assessing damage to houses in the Kannaland area. So, this will just delay the rehabilitation work done on the Garden Route.”
Several businesses in the Garden Route and Little Karoo have been forced to close following gale-force winds.
Damage has been reported across the region to homes and infrastructure.
Schools have also been closed.
A resident Lisakhanya Nkqezo from Thembalethu in George says her shack was destroyed by the wind.
“My neighbour called me while I was at work and told me that there’s something happening here. So, I had to rush home and when I arrived all of the material was gone. So, I had to come back home and attend to this. There’s a lot of damage that’s happened to my house. Even today I don’t know where I’m going to sleep.”
