Meyiwa trial delayed due to missing police occurrence book

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has faced delays due to a missing occurrence book requested by the defense.

Legal counsel Sipho Ramosepele informed the High Court in Pretoria that only two of the three requested occurrence books have been provided.

Colonel Silas Thoka, the third witness for Bongani Ntanzi, is set to testify about whether proper documentation was completed regarding items allegedly confiscated from Ntanzi, including a cellphone.

Ntanzi, along with four others, is on trial for the 2014 murder of Meyiwa.

Ramosepele says the missing occurrence book contains critical information related to exhibits and property submitted during the investigation.

“We heard from the witness yesterday. The cell register alone does not assist us. It is referenced in the occurrence book, as are the SAP 22 and the property register, SAP 13. The occurrence book is essentially the Bible of the police station. While the cell register may offer some assistance, it stands alone without clarity. For today’s proceedings, I aim to make progress, but referencing the missing occurrence book is crucial for my interaction with the witness present here today.”
