Five people, including two former police officers, have been sentenced to 17 years in prison by the Pinetown Regional Court for corruption linked to a 2018 murder case.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the case relates to the killing of ANC leader Lawrence Nxumalo in KwaDengezi, west of Durban.
According to the NPA, Nxumalo was murdered because he opposed the illegal sale of land by induna Felokwakhe Ndlovu.
The court heard that Bonginkosi Dlamini, who initially investigated the case, was paid R120 000 to try to persuade a witness not to testify against Ndlovu.
The payment was allegedly facilitated by another police officer, Khephu Ndlovu.
KwaZulu-Natal NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says, “The fight against corruption remains an organisational priority for the NPA. This case demonstrates that no individual is above the law, particularly those entrusted with enforcing it. The NPA further commends the cooperation between the SAPS and other stakeholders in ensuring accountability and justice.”
Authorities say the sentencing highlights efforts to address corruption within law enforcement and ensure accountability.
