Eskom has started cutting electricity supply to the Mamusa Local Municipality based in Schweizer Reneke.
The power utility says it has initiated legal processes due to mounting arrears owed by the municipality, which reportedly amounts to millions of rand.
Mamusa Municipality was among 14 municipalities across the country that received final notices from Eskom in March regarding possible interruptions to bulk electricity supply.
While several municipalities managed to delay or prevent the power cuts through payment arrangements, Mamusa reportedly failed to reach an agreement with Eskom to settle its outstanding account.
Areas affected by the electricity interruptions include Schweizer Reneke town, Migdol, extensions 7 and 14 in Ipelegeng Township, as well as surrounding farms.
Eskom says the interruptions form part of measures to recover unpaid municipal debt linked to electricity supply.
