EFF to picket as ConCourt prepares to rule on Phala Phala

Scores of members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are expected to picket outside the Constitutional Court of South Africa later this morning ahead of judgment in the Phala Phala matter.

The party approached the Apex court seeking to overturn Parliament’s decision to block an impeachment inquiry against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The matter relates to the theft of more than US$500 000 at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm in February 2020.

EFF spokesperson Thembi Msane says the party wants Ramaphosa to be held accountable over the handling of foreign currency kept at the farm.

Msane says, “From the beginning, the EFF has been the lone and consistent voice demanding accountability for the criminality, secrecy, and abuse of power surrounding the Phala Phala scandal. While many sought to protect Cyril Ramaphosa and preserve the image of the ANC, the EFF pursued every constitutional avenue available to ensure that no President is placed above the law…

“We await the judgment with the expectation that the Constitutional Court ensures that the Section 89 report is properly returned to Parliament for lawful consideration and accountability processes,” Msane adds.

The Constitutional Court announced earlier this week that judgment will be delivered on Friday, 8 May 2026.

The case follows a legal challenge brought by the EFF and the African Transformation Movement (ATM) after the National Assembly of South Africa voted against proceeding with an impeachment inquiry in December 2022.

At the time, the African National Congress (ANC) used its parliamentary majority to reject findings by an independent panel which concluded that the president may have violated sections of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

The judgment is expected to clarify Parliament’s obligations in handling impeachment-related processes involving the president.
