The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has raised serious concerns about the safety of residents in the province following alarming reports of rape cases involving law enforcement officers.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has recorded 27 rape cases involving police officers in Gauteng.
The DA has called for an urgent intervention and stronger consequences for officers who abuse their authority.
The party’s Gauteng Spokesperson for Community Safety, Michael Sun, says this situation highlights the need to upgrade security in police stations to ensure the safety of citizens and officers.
“Rape cases in terms of statistics is already high in the province, but then when you deep look into the stats – you see that there are actually police involved as perpetrators of these rapes and sexual assault crimes. What is also concerning out of those 27 cases there are police officers not just from SAPS, five are from SAPS and the rest are from metro police in either traffic police officers. It cuts across the board not just in terms of the blue uniform but your municipal, your metro officers to the traffic officers. So, it is indeed very much concerning.”
