COSATU calls for unity in ANC–SACP alliance amid tensions

Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says workers should play a role in ensuring the working relationship between the African National Congress (ANC) and South African Communist Party (SACP) is intact.

The union says it expects a positive resolution by workers during its elective conference in September.

Since the ANC and SACP public spat over the Communist Party’s decision to contest the elections as a party, the union has consistently urged their alliance partners to find a resolution and not divide the workers.

During the Gauteng Workers’ Day Rally in Brakpan, on the East Rand, COSATU National Spokesperson, Zanele Sabela, was diplomatic when quizzed about the rift between the alliance partners.

Sabela says the alliance has played a crucial role in workers’ rights in the country.

“With the alliance, I did explain that through progressive labour laws, we have achieved what we have because we were part of the alliance. Otherwise, we would not have come this far. As for that thing about the election cycle, it cannot be. It is difficult. You will be shocked down the line when you find out that our values are not aligned,” she says.
