ANC NEC meets over Phala Phala matter

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has denied that their Special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting under way in Cape Town called to discuss the Constitutional Court judgment on the Phala Phala matter is just a mere formality.

This as President Cyril Ramaphosa has already said he will not resign. Ramaphosa is not attending the one day gathering as he is the subject matter.

Briefing the media on the sidelines of the Special NEC, Mbalula said they allowed the President to speak first to ensure stability, while his party speaks at the end to develop a position that will be communicated to its structures and MPs.

“It was important as a sitting President of the country that he make a public statement with regard to that because in terms of the judgment, there is nothing that says he must resign as the President of the country. So, it’s not a procedural issue that will be discussed, we have to give guidance to our MPs in caucus and the entire party,” he says.

Mbalula says the NEC is the centre and as a result they must give direction in times like this, on what the way forward is and therefore no one can say anything without that guidance from them.

“Guide the structure, guide our caucus and everything that is to follow,” he adds.
