Zuma’s arms deal corruption case to proceed, despite pending appeals

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Nkosinathi Chili has ruled in favour of the state’s application, allowing the corruption trial of former President Jacob Zuma to proceed.

The state had applied for the court to order that the arms deal corruption case continue, despite any further applications or pending appeals.

It argued that the matter has already been delayed for more than 18 years.

Advocate Wim Trengove, representing the state, argued that the numerous unsuccessful applications brought by Zuma over the years had created the impression that the state was incapable of bringing him to trial.

In his judgment, Judge Chili said allowing criminal trials to be postponed because of pending court applications results in justice being delayed.
