Gauteng govt. mourns the passing of cultural icon Maria McCloy


The Gauteng Provincial Government has expressed sadness following the passing of cultural icon and multimedia practitioner, Maria McCloy.

McCloy was widely known for her work as a DJ, fashion designer, publicist and creative writer.

She played a significant role in shaping urban youth culture in South Africa.

MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile has described her as a vibrant champion of the arts who used her talent to uplift and promote others in the creative industry.

The MEC’s spokesperson, Onwabile Lubhelwana, says McCloy will be remembered for her immense contribution to music, fashion, television and African storytelling.

“Maria McCloy was a true and vibrant champion of the Arts in South Africa. McCloy was an influential voice in the entertainment industry and played a pivotal role in elevating the careers of many through music, television, production, fashion and her creative writing. She helped document and share the inspiring stories of her generation.”
