The Northern Cape government says it is intervening to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions in the John Taolo Gaetsewe Municipality after three people died as heavy rain caused floods.
Eighty-five villages have been affected, and 26 bridges have been damaged.
Twenty-six schools have been affected, disrupting lessons for Thirteen-thousand learners.
Provincial Roads and Public Works Department spokesperson Zandisile Luphahla says, “MEC Makatong called for the development of climate-resilient strategies and to take into account climate issues when building infrastructure. Over and above the interventions, the provincial government has called for the strengthening of by-laws, especially in rural areas where communities are allocated land in low-lying areas and along flood lines, and to address land invasions. Intervention is also sought by the province from mining houses and other organisations to assist the flood-stricken areas.”
