The Western Cape Department of Education has announced that all schools in George, Knysna, and Oudtshoorn will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
This as municipalities in the Garden Route and Little Karoo regions brace themselves for a Level 8 storm surge predicted to hit the region from Tuesday evening, until Thursday.
Disaster officials say between 100 to 200 mm of rain is expected, along with gale force winds and high sea swells.
Western Cape Education Minister, David Maynier, says, “The affected schools have received official notice of the closure from the head of department and have been requested to communicate the closure to parents. All other schools in the Western Cape will be open unless approval has been granted for closure, which will be done on a case-by-case basis. Our default position is always to keep schools open and only to close schools in exceptional circumstances.”

Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Emergency Services says it remains on high alert and will be monitoring all seven regions across the city, as cold weather conditions are expected from Tuesday until Wednesday.
EMS Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged residents to be cautious when using heating devices such as heaters and paraffin stoves.
“Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices – things like your heaters, paraffin stoves – not to leave them unattended while in use so that we can be able to prevent fire incidents which might occur. We remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city for any emergencies which might occur. Our residents are encouraged to call our Emergency Management Services Command and Control Centre on 011 375 5911 for any life-threatening emergencies,” says Mulaudzi.
