Disaster management officials in the Garden Route District Municipality say all roleplayers are on high alert following a warning of severe weather conditions.
The South African Weather Service has issued an alert for heavy rains and gale-force winds expected to affect the central Karoo, Little Karoo and parts of the Garden Route from today.
Disaster Management head Gerhard Otto says authorities are preparing for significant rainfall and strong winds.
Otto says, “We expect around 30 to 40, to 50 mm of rain in places. On Wednesday, the bulk of the rain can exceed 100 to 200 mm. We also expect wing gusts of 70 to 80 km per hour, and in addition to that, wave heights of between 5 and 8 metres. We have, in addition, requested a meeting with the Department of Education as we consider closing schools in the Garden Route for Wednesday.”
Officials say a meeting with education authorities is planned to assess the possibility of closing schools as a precaution.
