Duma assures contractors government is addressing payment delays

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC  Siboniso Duma has assured contractors and service providers that government is working to resolve ongoing payment delays. This follows an urgent meeting held in Merebank, south of Durban, where more than 200 contractors raised concerns over unpaid invoices and suspended projects.

The delays, which Duma says are linked to technical glitches and cash flow constraints at the provincial treasury,  have disrupted road maintenance and infrastructure projects across the province.

“There is almost R14.2 billion that is allocated in the department, but the issues of the cash flow lies in the hands of provincial treasurer. The money does not come straight to us. We send invoices to the provincial treasurer and we depend on them. However, we are aware that, unfortunately, the system does not have enough cashflow. I think there are not more than 20 halted projects. The majority of them still have capacity.”
