Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela.
Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has put the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) under administration. This follows challenges with the scheme’s leadership, following recent resignation of some board members, including the interim board chairperson, Dr Mugwena Maluleke.
Manamela also announced the appointment of Professor Hlengani Mathebula as the administrator.
During a media briefing in Pretoria, Manamela highlighted issues of poor governance and maladministration as some of the reasons for his decision.
“The administrator’s mandate will focus on stabilisation, accountability, (and) operational continuity for institutional renewal. This will include strengthening governance and internal controls, addressing audit and consequence management weaknesses, accelerating ICT, and system integration reforms,” he explains.
“Stabilising student funding operations, improving student accommodation oversight, resolving appeals and service delivery backlogs. [The administrator will also be responsible for] preparing the institution for a return to stable and ordinary governance,” adds Manamela.
