DA calls for probe into Minister Tolashe over luxury vehicle scandal

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has requested a parliamentary inquiry into what it calls serious criminal matters surrounding the registration of vehicles donated by the Chinese Embassy to the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League.

Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe is alleged to have registered the luxury vehicles under her two children’s names.

The DA has laid criminal charges against Tolashe at the Cape Town Police Station, about the alleged non-disclosure of the two cars and also for allegedly giving Parliament false information.

DA Member of Parliament on Social Development, Nazley Sharif, says the inquiry they are seeking will play a crucial role in getting to the bottom of the matter.

Sharif says, “And just recently, we have written to the Portfolio Committee on Social Development to request a parliamentary inquiry. Now this parliamentary inquiry is going to be very, very important because the fact of the matter is, social development is a very big portfolio. It’s a portfolio that is very important as it deals with the most vulnerable people in South Africa. It cannot be that we have a political principle that continuously finds itself in the midst of scandals, in the midst of chaos, when we have so many people who can’t afford to put bread on the table. We have women who are struggling with GBV. They don’t have shelters to go to. We have babies dying in Sassa lines. We have people going to Sassa at four AM in the morning and not getting any assistance.”
