ANC rejects dual membership after SACP confirms 2026 election bid

The African National Congress (ANC) says it cannot allow members to belong to organisations that will contest elections against it.
The party briefed the media shortly after the South African Communist Party (SACP) confirmed it would run independently in the 2026 local government elections.
While the ANC says it remains committed to the Tripartite Alliance, it warns that contesting elections separately is incompatible with alliance principles and organisational discipline.
This comes as the SACP accused the ANC of issuing ultimatums to its members.
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says, “Communists are part and parcel of the African National Congress, but in the election campaign, which we are now getting into uncharted waters, you can’t serve two bosses. It’s a practical example. You can’t stand for the Communist Party and stand for the ANC. You must make a choice, and that is why we have written to members to say you must choose. If you choose the ANC, it’s fine, you’ll get into the ANC campaign, but you can’t be in the SACP campaign and the ANC campaign at the same time.”
