Nkosi grilled over omitted Mashatile details at Madlanga Inquiry

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard how attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala allegedly called Sergeant Fannie Nkosi saying that he wanted his Luxor Card urgently as he was going to meet Deputy President Paul Mashatile and suspended Deputy Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya.

This information is contained in a handwritten statement that he submitted to police when his home was raided in October 2025.

Evidence leader Adv Matthew Chaskalson has revealed that Nkosi omitted the information about Mashatile in his typewritten statement to the Commission.

Chaskalson has asked him who is speaking through an interpreter if he was protecting Mashatile by omitting that piece information.

Chaskalson: “Is it not possible that you were trying to protect the Deputy President by not mentioning it?”

Nkosi: “No.”

‘Middleman’

The Commission has heard testimony alleging improper links between senior police officials and the criminal underworld.

Sergeant Nkosi told the commission that Matlala claimed he could make things happen for him including securing a promotion to a higher police rank.

The commission is now examining Nkosi’s alleged role as a key intermediary who facilitated financial and professional favours between Matlala and senior police figures.

Despite sustained questioning, Nkosi has maintained his version of events, conceding that he acted as a “middleman” between Deputy National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and Matlala.
