Thembisa resident in the East Rand blockade roads.
The City of Ekurhuleni has suspended electricity disconnections for indigent households in Thembisa in the East Rand.
This as tensions rise over a planned community shutdown.
Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has announced urgent measures following consultations with ward councillors and community representatives over concerns about the city’s indigent policy.
The Thembisa Community Forum will meet with city finance officials on Monday to discuss the way forward.
The Forum’s Chairperson Lele Lefakane says, “There’s still road closures, there’s still a protest, but it’s slowly, slowly coming to an end after the Mayor has issued a statement last night (Sunday) saying they will, with immediate effect, reconnect the households that are falling under the indigent program and teamed indigent program.”
Lefakane adds: “They will be restored back, they will have electricity, so they will be able to buy electricity as of this morning. So following that statement, I think things have slowly taken, they’ve slowly come down, the protest is slowly coming down, and things are slowly getting back to normal.”
