DA leader John Steenhuisen
DA leader John Steenhuisen is expected to address the media in Durban on Wednesday, where he started his political career 30 years ago.
SABC News has reliably learnt that he will not stand for re-election at the party’s forthcoming Federal Congress.
DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille has rejected suggestions that there’s tension in the party.
Political analyst Dr Piet Croucamp says Steenhuisen must be replaced because some party members appear to have lost confidence in him.
“It might even be that he’s lost the confidence of Helen Zille. Lots of stats show that around three million black South Africans are prepared to vote for the DA, but they don’t do so. The question is, why not? I think there’s something ideologically alienating in the party. Somebody like Geordin Hill-Lewis of the Western Cape is proving to be a good manager.”
