CAF hits Senegal, Morocco with heavy penalties over AFCON final chaos

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has imposed heavy sanctions on the Senegal and Moroccan Football Federations, certain players and officials for their role during the chaotic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Rabat earlier this month.

Senegal were fined a total of 615 000 dollars for improper and unsporting conduct of their players, technical staff and supporters who brought the game into disrepute.

It’s by far the biggest fine imposed by CAF.

The Senegal coach, Papi Thiaw, who led his players off the field in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in the match, was fined a further 100 000 dollars.

He was also suspended for five official CAF matches.

Two players received fines of 100 000 dollars each as well as two-match suspensions.

The Moroccan Football Federation must also pay fines totalling 315 000 US dollars for inappropriate behaviour of the stadium’s ball boys during the match, for invading the VAR review area and obstructing the referee’s work and the use of lasers by its supporters during the match.

One player was also fined 100 000 dollars and received a three-match suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.
