Joburg Council passes recommendation for Deputy Mayor position

The City of Johannesburg Council has passed a recommendation to introduce the position of a Deputy Mayor.

Thirty seven abstained, 87 voted no and 107 voted in favour of the recommendation.

Johannesburg African National Congress (ANC) Regional Secretary Sasabona Manganye says coalition partners have not yet decided who will fill the position.

However, newly elected Regional Chairperson Loyiso Masuku might be at the top of the list of candidates.

This was revealed during a motion of no confidence held in the City Council brought by minority party Al Jama-ah, with the support of other minority parties.

They are urging Mayor Dada Morero to step down over ongoing service delivery failures. Manganye also says that the motion against Morero might not go ahead as planned.

“There is an understanding that there is no need for motion of no confidence against the mayor. If there are issues, the ANC have opened up the platform for the parties to raise those issues with us as an organisation, at the different level of the organisation, and that process is under way. It has already started, and we will have those engagements, but emotion of no confidence. It’s not an option, even if it was to see, I mean, it was to be saved in today’s cancel. We will still defeat it. So, there is no need for it even to serve.”
