One officer allegedly linked to criminal cartels arrested: Khumalo

Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo says so far only one police alleged to be linked to the criminal cartels has been arrested in Gauteng.

Khumalo testified that most of Gauteng police are working with criminal cartels and moonlighting for them.

He was testifying before the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

The wide-ranging allegations were made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during a media briefing last year.

Khumalo elaborates: “In terms of this particular investigation, one can say we have one so far as I have indicated the whole plan was really disrupted from the sixth of December, when we were starting with these take down operations to dismantle the cartel from within and outside SAPS.”

Khumalo also adds that there are concerns that there are journalists working with criminal cartels in the country. Earlier this week, former acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Pahlane also testified and gave names of journalists that he said worked to discredit his name.
