The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services on Gauteng’s East Rand says a fire at a Germiston rubber recycling company has been contained.
It was discovered that about 15 000 litres of diesel had been stored in plastic tanks that had caught fire during delivery.
Due to runoff of diesel, the fire spread via storm water drains.
Ekurhuleni emergency spokesperson William Ntladi says, “Swift intervention, by the City of Ekurhuleni firefighters, prevented what could have been a catastrophic incident, as they successfully extinguished a volatile factory fire, in Germiston. About 15 000 litres of diesel, caught a light, and extensively damaging part of the factory structure.”
“The diesel runoffs impacted two streets, that is Power and Railway streets, before flowing down the storm water drain system. It is alleged that the cause of the fire is a spark, which took place during the offloading of the diesel into the reservoir plastic tanks,” explains Ntladi.
